Have you ever taken a personality test? I think they’re a useful thing to do even when you’re certain about who you are. For me at least, they show me that all human beings have common threads with one another. Think about it – if we can all be categorized within a five-letter alphabet, each letter having it’s own meaning, we all share something in common.

With the test I linked above, I’m an ESFJ “The Consul.” This personality type makes up 12% of the population.

A clip from that article says;

“ESFJs continue to enjoy supporting their friends and loved ones, organizing social gatherings and doing their best to make sure everyone is happy.”

There should probably be a picture of me next to that description.

With all of that being said, I absolutely love taking care of people and things; it makes me happy. I’ve wanted a dog for the longest time, but my busy three-job-lifestyle doesn’t really mesh with owning a feline friend.

For Christmas I got the next best thing… air plants. You may be thinking that there’s no way a plant and a dog have anything in common and while I can’t play fetch with my tillandsia, it still needs a lot of attention to keep it alive and the pay off is something beautiful.

My airplants came from Hinterland Trading with everything you need to make the perfect display for your house. I’ve never had the space to garden. Since I’ve been on my own I’ve only been in apartments with the most space being a windowsill for a small potted plant. There’s something really rewarding about it though. I just never liked the idea of a having a pot of dirt in my living room, so these couldn’t be more perfect.

They don’t require any soil and have their own roots within their base.

There are different methods on watering and care, so I’ve been coming up with my own. I currently am submerging them in water once a week for an hour or so (sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less). When I remove them for the water I turn them upside down and let them drain on a paper towel so that the roots are completely dry. Depending on how long you soak them, the drain time can vary.

You never want to put them back in their homes (some people use seashells or other items but I have the glass globes that came with them) while they’re still wet because they’re very susceptible to rot.

I’ve found the whole process of these little things to be so much fun. From setting up their globes to look ascetically pleasing and hold them in place, to watering them and seeing them get just a little greener.

The grey sheen to their leaves is normal and means they’re craving water.

Mine have gotten a little brown (mostly because of me being away for Christmas I think), but I was told to peel off those parts and that they’ll bounce right back – it seems like that’s what they’re doing.
