The Old & The New

Think about our generation verses generations of the past. People used to get married at 18, men shipped off to war, women were home having children and taking care of the house. Milk costs thirty cents, and houses were $12,000. Things were simple. They were refined, and while it was probably a  lot more work and people were forced to grow up quicker, was it a better world to live in? No social media, cyber-bullying, hardcore drugs. There was just courting, laughing, drive-in movies, and ice cream floats. Something about that intrigues me and makes me wonder what it would be like to live a day in the 1940’s or 50’s.

I wonder what people of that generation think and feel if they’re around to watch us today. How a grandfather who was married to his wife for sixty four years before she passed away, would feel about his twenty year-old grandson cheating on his girlfriend and dropping out of college. We have to admit our generation is a little more afraid of commitment than the ones proceeding us.

I have to think that we evolved in a positive way as well. Women have a better chance for a meaningful future. There are so many more resources in the world. More music, more knowledge, more technology to enhance medical science.

But on the other hand I feel like the excess music isn’t as personal, original, or intricately constructed as it used to be. The knowledge is that in which the people from the proceeding generations found out; we just recycle it. The technology for medical science helps the growing span of illnesses and poverty in the world, but that has all come about from the toxic additions we’ve continue to make to our world. Factories, dumps, landfills, drugs (or creating drugs out of household items), cigarettes, abuse of alcohol…

So what are your thoughts? Do you think that the simpler times were the better ones, or that we should feel luck for how advanced we are today? Do you feel that the self-righteous generation we’re a part of needs to take some lessons from the self-less ones before us?

Just some food for thought.
