I’ve always been a huge Drake fan ever since “Take Care” was released. That is probably one of my favorite albums ever. The thing that I like most about Drake is his ability to be real. His lyrics aren’t meant to make people feel good, they’re meant to tell a story. He’s one of those artists where after you listen to one song you feel like you’ve met him, and after you listen to five songs, you feel like you’ve known him forever.
Drake’s latest song “How About Now” was leaked earlier this week, and I have to say I’m happy to hear that it’s still the same old Drake with the same crazy talent.
The track leads with a voicemail from the one and only Nicki Minaj, and Drake wastes no time telling the story in the first verse.
“Always felt like my vision been bigger than the bigger picture. Crazy how you gotta wait til it’s dark out to see who really with ya.”
And with a simplistic and catchy hook, the story continues to be told until the last bar of the song.
When the song got leaked it was suspected to be from an unreleased album, while most loyal fans believe the tone suggests it was actually from Drake’s “Nothing Was the Same” era.
There is also an on-going debate on whether or not the track was dedicated to Rhianna or Nicki, but to be honest it’s not the female behind the lyrics that makes this track so raw, it’s the way Drake expresses his feelings to her. The listener definitely receives an outside-looking-in perspective on whatever relationship the lyrics revolve around.
