San Francisco Bans Lorde from Airplay

Tonight is the second game of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals and it has everyone talking, but so does the news of two San Francisco radio stations refusing to play New Zealand artist, Lorde’s first hit single “Royals.” “Royals” was apparently partially inspired by seeing a photograph of the Kansas City team in National Geographic magazine when Lorde was growing up halfway around the world. She even received an autographed jersey from arguably the best player in the team’s history, George Brett.

San Francisco natives were not at all thrilled when their rival team for the World Series, had an unofficial anthem being played on their home turf. The San Francisco stations that announced the news last week when their Giants took hold of the pennant were KFOG and KOIT. Both stations announced that they would not be playing the New Zealand artist’s song for the duration of the World Series.

KOIT’s programming director, Brian Figula released a statement about the decision stating that this was a change that was demanded by the fans. While KFOG’s director, Jim Richards made a fairly simply statement underlining that the station felt it was inappropriate to play a song that was repeatedly mentioning the name of a team their hometown was up against.

A Kansas City, Missouri station retorted by playing the track every hour on the hour from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. yesterday, which was the first game of the World Series faceoff between the two teams.

This unofficial “theme song” pandemonium has greatly affected the fans in each city as well. Lorde briefly touched on the topic during a conversation with VH1 declaring that she was simply motivated by the photo she saw of Royals player, George Brett signing autographs.

Strangely enough, Lorde’s song “Royals” has been gaining plays in the last few weeks as the World Series was rapidly approaching. Many Kansas City fans began making montage videos of the team with the song, making it their ringtones, and even having artists cover it at different bars and restaurants on the World Series opening night.

This is a classic case of not being able to make everyone happy, so it’s a good thing Lorde isn’t the kind of artist who strives for that. You don’t have to be a fan of her music to realize that she speaks her mind.

The second game of the World Series starts tonight at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. The Giants won last night’s game 7 to 1. It is too soon to tell who will clinch the victory with this year’s World Series, but it seems both cities are doing all they can to bring good mojo their way.
